Romiette and Julio by Sharon Draper ****

I recommend the book, Romiette and Julio, because it caught my attention when I saw the title. We read the play, Romeo and Juliet in ninth grade, so I already knew that story.

The novel, Romiette and Julio, is set in more present times. The two main characters, Romiette and Julio meet in an online chat room. They go to the same school, but they don’t realize that until later when they meet.

Like Romeo and Juliet, they have one big problem and that is that they are different races and their school is threatened by a gang who doesn’t want one of the pretty black girls to be with a Hispanic boy. Julio is Hispanic and Romiette is African American. Romiette and Julio have to be careful because the gang is dangerous and threatens them all of the time.

The story is about two people from different backgrounds solving a problem and their love growing stronger as they work to end this problem.

I liked this book because I knew the idea behind the plot, but the end is different than “Romeo and Juliet”. It was a good story. It was different than Romeo and Juliet, but I liked it more than the play.

I recommend this book to people who are looking for romance and suspense. I also think this book is good for readers who struggle a little bit with reading.
