The Yankees and the Astros square off in the American League Wild Card game tonight. The winner of the game advances to the ALDS to face the Kansas City Royals.
The Astros enter the game with a .407 road winning percentage. If the Astros beat the Yankees tonight, it would be good news for the Royals, since they claimed home-field advantage over the Toronto Blue Jays.
On the other hand the Yankees are on a bit of a slide, losing seven out of their last 10 games. The Yankees have been known for their postseason success. They have reached the World Series three times, and the ALCS seven times since the year 2000.
The Astros started off the year hot, then cooled off quite a bit, then at the end of the regular season, almost coming back to take the lead in the American League West.
Last year, the Royals played the Oakland A’s in the AL Wildcard. They won by a score of nine to eight in twelve innings of play. They then went on to to sweep both the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Baltimore Orioles. They then lost to the San Francisco Giants in the 2014 World Series in their first trip to the postseason or World Series since 1985.
The Royals are in a very different position than they were in one year ago. Instead of being the ones in the hot seat, they are the ones waiting to see who their first opponent will be in the postseason.
