A glimpse of Arrowhead Stadium against the 9-2 Broncos Dec. 1
A glimpse of Arrowhead Stadium against the 9-2 Broncos Dec. 1

It’s a Sunday afternoon in November, and it’s a bit nippy outside. Yet, you and thousands of other fans are bathed in red, rooting for a single cause. And that single cause, is the 9-3 Kansas City Chiefs.

In the 2012-2013 football season, the Chiefs went 2-14 in the AFC West, lead by Matt Cassel, who is now with the Minnesota Vikings. So with a losing season in the rear-view mirror, Chiefs fans are jumping at the chance to watch a good game between their team and their competitors.

So far in the 2013-2014 season, the Chiefs are 9-3 and ranked #2 in the AFC West to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos and ranked #3 in the NFL. While last year the Chiefs were last in the AFC West and ranked #32 in the NFL. So far everything has gone uphill compared to last year, we are chalked full of elite level players on both sides of the ball and Alex Smith was the last piece of the puzzle.

Alex Smith, who was traded from the San Francisco 49ers for last year’s second round picks and if more than eight games were won another second round pick next year, has scored 14 passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and almost 2500 passing yards in Week 12.

With the acquisition of Alex Smith our offense has gone off the wall compared to previous seasons, with Jamaal Charles and his running game, to the Chiefs receiving core with Dwayne Bowe, and Donnie Avery.

“Our biggest fear should be a team with a good rush defense. Because our running game drives the offense,” said Jon Morris, junior.

With two consecutive losses, regardless the Chiefs have given the city something to celebrate. Initiating traditions across the city, from block parties, to weekly barbeques.

“My family and I have a watch party at somebody’s house and barbeque or we go to the game,” said Donna Shahbazi, sophomore.

While others just need football in their life now that South football is over.

“I think now that South football is over, I need football in my life. And my grandparents are die hard Chiefs fans,” said Hannah Brown, Senior.

So far the Chiefs have maintained a winning record, and the residents of Kansas City has shown their love of their Chiefs.

After the entire 2012-2013 season, the total attendance of games was 548,070 people, according to ESPN Travel, regarding a season not including the playoffs is 16 games. This season, the Chiefs have played 11 games and the total attendance this season is 450,416. With a maximum attendance at Arrowhead of 76,416 people, and five games left, attendance to home games has skyrocketed.

So far this season, the Chiefs have not only taken the NFL and its watchers by storm but has also given our city something to look forward to every Sunday. So when fans tune in on Sunday, and watchers see the 137.5 decibel Sea of Red, the Kingdom is here.
