Top 5 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time

Humans have always been intrigued by the mysterious and exploring new ideas and technology. Film is a medium where you can put your imagination into a blend of images, sound, and dialogue. It’s a fantastical thing where anything is possible, thus, making sci fi a popular genre of film. Here are my five favorites.

1)      Star Wars: A New Hope

This is essentially the genre in one film. Never has there been more geek fandom for a series. Billions of dollars of merchandise have been sold; toys, t-shirts, books, you name it, they’ve got it. But what’s more important is the masterpiece of a film that all of that is based around. It’s a collection of fantastic characters (Yoda, Obi Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, do I go on?), a faraway universe, and geeky verbiage. Of course the original trilogy of Star Wars is the true masterpiece; the last three films made weren’t also as bad as everybody seems to think. This is a fantastic film with wonderful acting, great visuals (for the time) and some sweet makeup. If you’re looking to unleash your inner nerd, I’d head here.

2)      E.T.

More praise for Steven Spielberg. I may sound like a broken record, but this guy has to be the greatest director of all time. E.T. is the film that everyone saw as a kid. It’s the story of a young suburban boy who finds and befriends an alien, nicknamed “E.T.” (short for extraterrestrial). It’s a charming film with memorable scenes, and some great characters. It’s a classic Spielberg film, and that’s why it’s one of his best.

3)      Inception

This is a newer, but still incredible film. The sci-fi themes are here, but mixed with some powerful drama and modern day situations. The concept of someone slipping into your dreams and implanting an idea is a crazy one, but that’s why it’s so much fun to watch. The cast is one of the best in recent history and it’s filled with awesome performances. The visuals are astonishing, and it’s filled with some great music. The cinematography in this film is another amazing quality. There’s a lot to love, and that’s why it’s on here. It’s a lot less geeky than the other films here, so if that’s what you’re up for, Inception is great for you.

4)      Jurassic Park

There have been multiple sequels, and none of them are even close to being as good as the original. Again, this is a film most people saw as a kid. And here we go again with more praise for Spielberg. This is a wildly original film idea, and executed nearly flawlessly. There is fantastic CGI, and that’s something I rarely say. The performances don’t necessarily stand out but that’s because the actors aren’t the real stars; the dinosaurs are. We get some fantastic images of them and get to see them live in action. This is a very cool film, with lots of exciting moments.

5)      Terminator 2: Judgment Day

This was back when Arnold Schwarzenegger was known for bodybuilding instead of being the “Governator.” Arnold rarely makes a good film, but this is his best. The series’ popularity has grown in recent years, but it’s still this film that is considered the best in the series. There are some awesome action scenes, and we get some cool performances and some really cool cyborgs including the C-1000. This is a pretty cool film, and it’s classic sci-fi.
