All eyes will be on the Missouri Tigers this weekend as they take on Georgia in their SEC Opener

Welcome to 2012’s first Weekend Watch, the Friday edition of College Corner where I take a look at the coming Saturday’s best match-ups and make my predictions for the weekend. Week one had a few good match-ups, and although week two doesn’t feature quite as many headliners, there is plenty of good football on this Saturday. Just a reminder, all rankings indicated in this blog are my own from Monday’s edition. Let’s dive right in.

#25 Washington @ #3 LSU, 6:00, ESPN
While the Bayou Bengals are always tough to beat, especially at home, they’ll have their hands full when Steve Sarkisian’s Huskies come to Death Valley Saturday night. Led by dual-threat Junior Quarterback Keith Price, Washington has one of the most underrated offenses in the nation. Although they are solid on that side of the ball, the defense is a little weak. Look for the Tigers to pounce on this. LSU’s defense has more than enough speed and strength to limit Washington’s offense and the Tigers should have no problem scoring on this Washington defense. This is a perfect opportunity for LSU to make a non-conference statement to counter Alabama’s drubbing of Michigan.
Prediction: LSU 27, Washington 13

#13 Nebraska @ UCLA, 6:30, Fox
Nebraska is more than capable of winning the Big Ten this year. I am very big on the Huskers and Quarterback Taylor Martinez, who after last week’s showing looks like he finally has grasped the position and taken control of the offense. Although UCLA was playing Rice in week one, the Bruins looked very impressive in their 49-24 win over the Owls. UCLA ran for 343 yards including 214 with three touchdowns from Senior Running Back Johnathan Franklin. Nebraska’s defense very well could limit this offense, but if UCLA gets out of the gates on full momentum, this has all the makings for a huge upset.
Prediction: UCLA 37, Nebraska 31

#20 Florida @ Texas A&M, 2:30, ESPN
ESPN’s College Gameday will by in College Station for Texas A&M’s 2012 season and SEC debuts. The Aggies will be more than motivated to prove a point after a disappointing 2011 campaign that ended in a loss to formal rival Texas. After their first game against Louisiana Tech was postponed due to Hurricane Isaac, A&M will open up on national television against the Gators. While the energy will be high at Kyle Field, the Aggies are still a mediocre squad, plain and simple. This team went 7-6 last year and lost its best receiver and starting Quarterback. Florida’s speed will be too much for A&M; the opener will just be more of the same for Aggie faithful.
Prediction: Florida 31, Texas A&M 13

Aside from the aforementioned match-ups, let’s go ahead and take a look at what the three area teams have lined up against them as all three look to improve to 2-0.

Miami (Fla.) @ #19 Kansas State, 11:00, FX
Kansas State had no problem steam rolling Missouri State last week, trouncing the Bears 51-9. Although the name on the opposition appears a little more tenacious, the Wildcats shouldn’t have any problem attaining win number two on their 2012 campaign. Junior Running Back John Hubert had a sterling performance against Mo. State, rushing for 152 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries. If Hubert can take on some of the work load in the rushing game for Collin Klein this year, the sky is the limit for the Wildcats.
Prediction: Kansas State 45, Miami 21

Rice @ Kansas, 2:30, Fox Sports
Although Kansas looks to have another tough year in the Big XII, the Jayhawks got themselves a win in week one against FCS opponent South Dakota State. KU now looks ahead to Rice, who is coming off a performance in which they surrendered an inconceivable 343 rushing yards against UCLA. Although I can just about guarantee they won’t surrender quite as many yards on Saturday, I’m still going to give the edge to Kansas to improve to 2-0.
Prediction: Kansas 20, Rice 14

#8 Georgia @ Missouri, 6:45, ESPN2
Just as Texas A&M is gearing up for their SEC debut, Mizzou is concocting their own way to enter the conference with a splash. After a 62-10 win over FCS member Southeastern Louisiana, the competition stiffens up with the favorites to win the SEC East coming to Columbia, Mo. Georgia has plenty of NFL talent on both sides of the ball but has suffered through a miserable offseason filled with injuries, arrests and player discipline which has resulted in a partial depletion of the roster. The energy at Faurot Field will be off the charts and while the pick may seem biased, I believe the Tigers will create more than a splash in their SEC debut.
Prediction: Missouri 27, Georgia 21

Well folks, there you have it. Only time will tell if I really am the psychic of college football or just some schmuck who is too privileged to own his own blog. If you’d like to compare picks or just rub it in my face (or compliment me) after the games have concluded this weekend, feel free to comment. Until then, let’s enjoy America’s favorite sport for just the second of many weeks to come.
