With spring sports beginning next week at South, and many teams are starting their preparations for the season, including girls soccer.
To prepare for the season, the team has had conditioning every Tuesday and Thursday and also morning futsal on Wednesdays. There has been a lot of girls coming out to get better every week and giving the coaches an idea for what the teams will look like.
Sophomore Brylie Goff said, “The team will be pretty good because we have a lot of good freshmen coming in and the seniors are good.”
Since there are so many girls trying out this year, the competition is going to be tough for getting on specific teams.
Goff said, “ [I’m nervous about] keeping up with the upperclassmen.”
Despite all the nerves going into the season, junior Maggie Claassen is most excited about getting to hangout with her teammates and winnings games.
“The impact my fellow teammates and coaches have had on me and my ability to play,” said Claassen about her favorite thing about high school soccer.
The new season is also bringing in a new head coach, Jared Byrne. After 20 years of having Joe Toigo as head coach, Coach Byrne hopes to continue to build upon the program and tradition at South.
“I’m looking forward to working with the girls and getting the best out of them that we can,” said Coach Byrne.
Tryouts for girls soccer begin on Feb. 26.
