Should School Start Later?

Should Park Hill South start school one hour later? Research by the national sleep foundation shows that 60% of children under the age of 18 complain of being tired during the day and 15% said that they fell asleep at school at least once during the school year. An extra hour in the morning would leave more time for students to sleep. More sleep = less tiredness.

An 8:30 am start time may be beneficial for students at South. Some students at South want the extra hour for attendance in the morning.

“I think it would be nice because I am always late, said Hallie Vandeven, Sophomore, “Being able to have extra time in the morning would help that.”

Other students at South want the extra hour for solely for sleep.

“I do think students would benefit from it,” said Allie Hickey, Junior, “Kids would be more awake in class when given extra time to sleep in the morning.”

However there are some students who think that the extra time is unnecessary and would be problematic.

“I feel like one extra hour would not really help,” said Tyler Pisoni, Junior, “If we don’t have the extra hour we get out of school earlier.”

Overall, benefits of having the extra hour include having extra time in the morning to sleep and higher attendance numbers. The negatives of having the extra hour in the morning include getting out of school later in the afternoon and school sports schedules would have to change to accommodate for the later dismissal time.clock
