The standout high of Sporting’s season is easily the US Open Cup. The Open Cup is a tournament that includes both MLS and USL teams, giving the USL teams an idea of what level the MLS performs at along with a chance to make a name for themselves at a higher level. Sporting has been coasting through the tournament with relative ease, but the September 9th final against Philly should be a challenge. Philly star (and former SKC player) CJ Sapong is the biggest scoring threat on the Union, with 20 goals in all competitions so far this season. He is currently on a 2-game scoring streak, which sporting defenders plan on breaking.
“He’s definitely a handful up top. So we’re going to have to really be locked in to get a result against him,” SKC captain, Matt Besler, told mlssoccer.com.
While CJ is a the primary threat for Philly, Sporting forwards Dom Dwyer and Krisztian Nemeth have been wreaking havoc over the 2015 season. Along with the stars of Nemeth and Dwyer, Sporting has players like Graham Zusi and Benny Feilhaber in the middle of the park that can be difficult to handle. The Sporting team is going to be laying it all on the line for the September 30th final, as their MLS season has been less than expected.
“I think Sporting is going to pull out the win tonight. They rested all of their starters in the league match against Seattle on the weekend, so they will have a fresh eleven to play Philly.
With the chance to win a trophy in the late season, both teams will be laying it all on the line. Sporting KC will be looking to bring the cup back to their hometown, while Philly will want their fair share of the glory.
