The director is in charge of everything on a movie set. They run the production, the actors, and everyone behind the scenes. There are tons of directors right now that are blowing up, and becoming overnight sensations. And we also have directors that have been around the business, and have done fantastic jobs for long periods of time. Here are my five favorite directors right now.
1) Steven Spielberg
Spielberg has been a genius since entering the business in 1969. He has had multiple masterpieces including Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, and of course E.T. His early beginnings were science fiction, but he has branched out creating films about war, politics, and just everyday people. He has a very signature style, and one that is recognized immediately. He is one of the best of all time, and it would be a crime for me not to give him the number one spot.
2) Quentin Tarantino
Like Spielberg, Tarantino has an unmistakable style. Simply put, there is no other director like him. As great movie critic Richard Roeper said “it’s not as if he invented pop culture dialogue, stylized violence, and hipster soundtracks, but he mashed em’ all together to create a new form of cinematic expression that was imitated 100 times over the ensuing decade.” Couldn’t have said it any better myself, Roep.
3) Zack Snyder
Snyder is great for stylized violence seen in his two best films Watchmen and 300. He’s one of the many that tried to imitate Tarantino, and one of the few that actually succeeds. However, his work is a little bit different that Tarantino’s. I love the style of Snyder, and although he likes to take time with his projects, I always look forward to them. He is a great director, and one that has earned every ounce of my respect.
4) Wes Anderson
Every time I turn on one of Anderson’s films I leave delighted, and joyful. He has a signature touch on every one of his films that puts him in the upper level of current directors. Moonrise Kingdom and Fantastic Mr. Fox are outstanding representations of his work. If you are ever down turn on one of Anderson’s films. He won’t disappoint.
5) Ben Affleck
Affleck has become one of the best directors in Hollywood, as well as being a fantastic actor. He has become a stalwart as both, and I am now a big fan of his work. Argo and The Town were great films where he acted, and directed, and that’s one big challenge. His work has developed, and although I doubted him in the beginning, I now think that Affleck has not only stood up to the challenge, but exceeded all expectations.
