At South, no matter what grade you are in, you will have to write the dreaded research paper for ALA or even Comp. and Reading. I know for me, it’s always a challenge to write one. With all the compartments that go with it, it is hard for me to concentrate on the paper itself. Thus ending up with a not-so-good paper. I know I could do better, but I just don’t know how.To even start a research paper there has to be a topic. And when you get that topic, then you start your actual research. Most of you will do most of your research at school, which is good. You’re teacher is there to help you. But sometimes you will have to do it on your own.

Research time mean internet surfing. That doesn’t mean you can procrastinate yourself and end up cramming this thing in at the last minute. I’ve been there and it is so not fun. With surfing the internet, it means to use search enjines and other reliable places to get your information. Don’t forget to check to see if you can use any of your sources since teachers will want you to use only a certain of URL’s, such as .gov, .com, e.t.c.

It is also good to see if there is any printed material avaliable to you in the library. They could give you some insite you didn’t get before.

Now, make sure you are organized when you do this, you don’t mixed information in the wrong spot , it could ruin your paper. Also keep your research somewhere safe so that you can get to it easily and not have to worry.

Once you have all the research information you need, it is time to write your thesis statement. A thesis statement is like a one-to-two sentence condensing your argument of your whole paper. It can sometimes be a little hard to do, but just think about how you want to convey your argument to whoever is going to read your paper.

When your thesis is done, you want to create an outline of what you want your paper to say. It 1. helps you stay orgainaized and 2. helps you remember what you want to put where.

Now, a big thing we have to talk about before you get your pen or pencil to work is: plagiarism. You will have lots of information that you will just want to put down word byword because maybe it sounds good or maybe you just really don’t want to do it, but I’m telling your right now, DONT DO IT. Don’t plagiarize, you’ll only hurt yourself. Instead do your best to write it in your own words.

You may now start putting that pen/pencil to work. Remember to think things through, go through your research and always CITE  anything that you didn’t come up with yourself.

Now that you wrote your first draft, proof-read it. Make sure you conveyed your idea across the page and also used correct spelling, grammar, and content usage. If you are unsure it is always good to have someone else proof-read it as well. It is also good to make a checklist to see if you have everything you need for your paper. Basically have all your ducks in a row.

And lastly, when you have lost all sleep, for the due date has kept you up all night, you must do the FINAL STAGE (dum, dum, dummmmmm) And that is to get your chicken scratch paper, don’t get offended my handwriting sucks too, and get to that computer and type. Type it all up and feel happy as you release your worry about whether or not to type it. Every teacher usually requires you to. Also remember to use MLA style so that you don’t loose points.

And when it is written spell check that thing! Then print that sucker and there, sir, is your research paper. It wasn’t that hard, was it? Now just don’t loose it over night or before class and everything should be just peachy. You got the Writing Wizards on your side, of course your paper will be great.
