Fourth ranked Kansas has odds to win Big 12 title for eighth straight year

For the past seven years, every team in the Big 12 has had to sit back and watch the Kansas Jayhawks take home the crown as conference champs. Not only have they won the regular season title, but have won the tournament title every year except for 2005 and 2009.

As the season comes to an end, only one team has a chance to knock off the Jayhawks for the rights to the Big 12 title: the Missouri Tigers.

Not only did the Tigers already top KU earlier this month, but they had an impressive record of 25-4. Their only losses have come to Kansas this last Saturday, twice to a young, energetic Kansas State, and to a struggling Oklahoma State team in Stillwater, OK.

“It was a good hard fought game, I still believe Missouri is a better team than KU though,” said die-hard MU fan Robert Pollan about their most recent loss.

The Tigers are not far behind Kansas which only has two conference losses (MU and Iowa State), and but will have to count on KU losing their last two games so they could be tied for first in the Big 12. KU, 22-5 overall, has won at least a share of the Big 12 title with their win against third ranked Mizzou and will have to beat Texas at home and Oklahoma State away.

However, due to the fact that the game was at home for Kansas this Saturday, most people knew they would win easily. Among people that agreed included freshman athlete, Easton Fortuna.

“KU wins Big 12, because they are better than MU,” said Fortuna. He later said that Kansas would win simply because of their “inside presence.”

The Jayhawks had a thrilling, come from behind win and won it in overtime with a score of 87-86. At halftime Missouri was winning by a shocking 13 points and at one point were winning by 19. With help from Thomas Robinson, a player of the year candidate who had his 20th double-double of the year, KU easily overcame the deficit and went on to win the game.
Missouri had many chances to win the game though but was largely hurt by their foul trouble and scoring drought of nearly seven minutes in the second half. At the buzzer in regulation, Phil Pressey had a chance to win the game for MU but was rejected by Robinson who made sure there was no chance of the ball getting near the basket.

The Jayhawks then went on to dominate in overtime and forced Michael Dixon of MU to not get a shot off allowing KU to even the season series at 1-1 and to win the Big 12 crown for the eighth straight year.

Although Kansas beat Missouri this week, some people still think that the Tigers will still win the Big 12 such as sophomore Ashton Anderson.

“MU will win the Big 12, but will be too cocky next year [in the SEC],” said Anderson.

Her decision was mostly biased because she is an avid Kansas State fan and said she absolutely hates the Jayhawks. Luckily for Kansas though, the Wildcats beat the Tigers this week giving them another edge over MU for the Big 12 title.

With only the Big 12 tournament left, Kansas has an even better chance of grabbing a number one seed and might happen to run into the fast paced and revenge seeking Missouri Tigers again.
