Student wear pink at the Pink Out football game in October. Photo by Amanda Danneau-Rever

Pink tank tops, sweaters, pants, some people have painted their faces pink. By taking just a quick look at the South students in the stands, you can already notice that this game is not like any other. Why do they all wear pink? Why aren’t they supporting their team by wearing the school colors like they usually do?

There was a whole different idea behind this sudden turn to pink instead of the school colors black and purple at the football game than just a lack of school spirit. South students all chose the wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Every year, not only our school or our country, but a big part of the world turns pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the whole month of October all over the world fundraisers and events are held in order to raise money and to create awareness for breast cancer research.

South participates by having several fundraisers, mostly organized by STUCO.

One of these fundraisers is known as Jeans Day for Teachers, which allows teachers to wear jeans when they make a donation. As teachers are more than happy to help this charity and love to wear casual clothes, this fundraiser is very popular.

“Anytime I can wear jeans, I am on board with that, it is and added benefit,” said Nancy Fullerton, Communication Arts.

Not only teachers are eager to participate in these fundraisers, students have also greatly stood up for this charity.

Danni Britz (10) said she hasn’t participated in a fundraiser yet, but would like to do so.

“It is a great idea from STUCO to do these fundraisers. It is definitely something that is important and the money is always welcome,” said Britz.

One of the fundraisers that has been held for students is the Pinkout football game, on Sept
30. Students who were going to the game were encouraged to wear pink and according to Carney, many students did that.

“Students said it was the most pink they had seen on a pinkout,” said Carney.

During the football game STUCO raised money by selling bracelets and a boy from each grade walked around dressed in pink to collect money. Carney said that Blake Foster (11) collected $300 during that night.

According to Sarah Matthews, STUCO sponsor, all the money that has been raised will go to the Komen Foundation, “a big national research foundation”. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement. They are working to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care and support science to find cures.

”We have changed our goal a couple of times, but right now our goal is to raise $1300,” said Carney.

So far they have already raised a little more than $1000 with all their fundraisers combined, according to Matthews.

Other fundraisers that have helped in reaching that amount have been the selling of pink lemonade, bracelets and t-shirts during lunch all through October.

“ We got the bracelets as a donation from a former English teacher at South, so we thought we could sell them,” said Carney.

As the big amount of money that has already been raised so far shows, everybody agrees on how important Breast Cancer Awareness Month is.

‘ So many people are affected by it. It is very common in the United States,” said Matthews. “Awareness is important,” she added.

Carney shares this opinion and also pointed out why it is so important to raise money.

“Many people who have breast cancer cannot afford the medical care that they need, so it is good to raise money,” said Carney.

Besides trying to raise as much money as possible, the big goal of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to raise awareness for this disease. STUCO has contributed to that by raising awareness at South.

“Young people need to be aware of it so they can be saved and help others,” said Carney.

For such a great cause, wearing pink or painting your face pink is the least you can do to support.
